Mr. Hoppy

Mr.Hoppy is a character from a tv show called Monkey Dust. This 1970's space hopper was the prize possession of Ivan Dobski, the Meat Safe Murder. Ivan was falsely convicted of the murder. Only somebody called Channel 4 proved he didn't do it.

Upon failing to adjust to life outside of Crowmarsh Ivan and Mr Hoppy inevitably ended up back within the confines of HM Prison system.

Mr.Hoppy was pictured in this image in Galway, Ireland.

The next set of photos will all be from Galway.

Enjoy!

NY

Well I've ran out of photos from New York. Thanks to anyone who decided to have a look. I'm going to start a new set of photos this week. Not sure where they will be from yet though...

Governmentality

This piece near Houston (I really should have brought my GPS logger) was commissioned by somebody....I don't know who. Anyways, I was talking to a guy about graffiti and tagging and we started discussing the movements of graffiti from street and on within New York. He was telling me about the difficulties with the authorities etc. This particular piece seemed to irritate him a little bit.

The wall in this picture was set aside for the purpose of graffiti. Contradictory in terms of what graffiti communicates on many levels.

Anyways, I said as my last photo from New York I would end on this note. With a piece that thins the line between appropriating parts of the street, and permitting actions in certain areas of the street that are unsocial in others.

Please Forgive Me

This is one of my favorite pieces that I found in New York. Its on the same building as the big face. The use of different materials in this piece really adds to it for me. Everything from the stems to the petals on the plants have been recreated. The petals themselves were made of small tiles.

Fenton

ignore this text...backfat

Backfat (aka The Terror of Windsor Tenis) is a tagger from New York known for his presence in conspicuous places. Not sure if this is the still the original as there are reports of a copycat going around. Not exactly sure about this one.

Here's a couple of links about Backfat. Second one is about his arrest way way back in 2007.

Mr.Monopoly

Mr.Monopoly. Or as a quick trip to Wiki will you, its Mr.Monopoly, previously known as Rich Uncle Pennybags.

He must have a lot of bags to afford the rent in New York.

New York City

So I thought the best place to start this blog was with a quick trip to New York. I visited New York for 4 days in November last year. The most surprising thing about New York was how much I liked it. Having lived in London a few years ago I fully expected NYC would soon have me moving to match the pace of bankers on trains. Stocked up on briefcases devoid of etiquette who happily push past pregnant women in a rush to make that connection at Kennington.

Ahem

Anyway, New York. Great place. I got the subway out of Manhattan to the Bronx one night and without thinking put on Combat Rock. I like when little things like Red Angel Dragnet can become associated with moments when in strange places.

I saw a lot of great graffiti when I was there. Here are some photos of New York where the cities authors speak.

"We've got tags. We've got politics. We've got eye candy."
